Ayra Starr Celebrates Transitioning Into Adulthood in New Album “The Year I Turned 21”

Grammy-nominated singer Ayra Starr has released her long-awaited second album “The Year I Turned 21” in celebration of her 21st birthday coming up in June. Living up to her title “Sabi Girl” it is settled that there are indeed levels to celebrating a birthday because dropping an album has definitely raised the bar!
The young artist who is making waves in the Nigerian music industry and rapidly doing the same globally under the Marvins record, dropped her debut album “19 and Dangerous” back in 2021 and on the 31st of May 2024, she again blessed her listeners with her sophomore album. She had initially dropped teasers of the album earlier this year as well as the album’s hit single “Commas”.
The 15-track album feature collaborations with popular artists namely; Asake, Seyi Vibes, Coco Jones, Anitta, Giveon, Alejandro, Rvssian, and Rauw on tracks like “Goodbye (Warm Up)”, “Bad Vibes”, “Woman Commando”, “Santa” and “Last Heartbreak Song”. The Year I Turned 21 has a harmonizing assortment of Afrobeats and R&B, with a tinge of Latin pop in addition to the lyrics which doesn’t fail to capture her growth and progress in the music industry.
Ayra has fully embraced her transitioning into adulthood and femininity particularly in “Woman Commando”. She also pays tribute to two Nigerian music icons Wande Coal and Don Jazz who also happens to be her label boss, on “Jazzy’s Song” Her entire album expresses a rollercoaster of emotions as a growing woman and superstar, positive vibes, liberty from toxic bond, sensuality, heartbreak, grief and healing which is definitely what her listeners can resonate with.
The “Naija Sabi Girl” is undeniably one of the most promising young female afrobeats artiste, who has made her impact not just in her home country but also in the global light and her second album proves that she is most assuredly moving in the right direction.
